The WHI Advantage
The real value in a home inspection is information. It’s critical in making decisions and not having it when you need it can cost thousands. The WHI advantage is my ability to clearly and concisely communicate information to you, the home buyer. As we inspect the house together I will show you what I am taking about and tell you why it’s important. When I give you my report, I’ll take as much time as needed to insure you understand the report and everything in it.
Customer Service
I’ll provide a thorough comprehensive inspection when you need it. We’re available 7/24 and will deliver a full report 2-3 hours after completing the inspection. Our behaviour is governed by the OAHI Code of Ethics. We’ll abide by the letter and the spirit of the Code. My job is to provide a thorough, independent inspection, not influence your decision, one way or the other for ANY reason.
Easy to Understand Factual Reports
I use the Inspect Support Services report system. I selected it because it covers all the information I need to provide for you. It meets the OAHI Standard of Practice and includes a wealth of information about building and building systems and how to maintain them to minimize costs. I’ll show you before we start the inspection.
Client Focused Inspections
I’ll talk to you. We’d like to know your family’s needs and expectations. We’ll inspect the house together, it’s important that you are there. I’ll show and tell you about everything I do. Then we can make an accurate assessment of how the house fits you. For example, you have three teenagers, that one tiny bathroom may not be ideal for you. Dad’s hobby is woodworking and he has some big power tools, fortunately, the owner just upgraded the electrical service.
Options and Solutions
It’s likely there will be defects and deficiencies in the house we inspect. Most often, they are nuisance items and easily corrected. Occasionally, there will be a serious issue. When there is, I’ll find the cause and provide specific recommendations about correcting the problem. When possible, I’ll provide options with a range of prices. For example, some older homes have ungrounded wiring with 2 prong receptacles. You could upgrade the entire house (several thousand $$) install GFCI circuit breakers where 2 prong plugs exist (a few hundred $$), install individual GFCI receptacles where required (a few 10’s of $$) or simply ensure you use only CSA approved double insulated appliances in the 2 prong receptacles.
Certified and Knowledgable
Your inspection will be done by Chuck Dobson, owner and operator of WHI. I managed Data Networks, central offices, research labs, construction and building refit projects for Bell Canada for 27 years. Since leaving in 2008 I have operated my own home renovation and repair business. I completed the Algonquin College Home Inspector Certificate program and achieved certification by the OAHI in 2010.
My son Pat Dobson is completing the Algonquin College Civil Engineering Technologist program. He is a certified asbestos abatement technician working the environmental services industry in Ottawa. He has experience in residential construction, hazardous materials and asbestos abatement. Pat provides consulting on building construction and structural issues and asbestos.
